A House In The Country…

An elegant country home has been created for a couple, who commissioned family firm Dovetail to carry out a major refurbishment from concept to completion

Two derelict mill cottages bought by a young professional couple have been transformed into a stunning six-bedroom home with a beautiful kitchen, living area and playroom, boot-room and utility, to accommodate their growing young family.

The historic cottages. in a wonderful rural location just off the Pennine Way, close to the Lancashire Yorkshire border, were extended, renovated and refurbished by the skilled craftsmen at Dovetail, who made all the cabinetry at their in-house manufacturing base in West Yorkshire.

Located on the moors above the village of Cowling, Dovetail’s showroom is full of stunning room sets that are practical as they are beautiful. A family-run business established more than 40 years ago, Dovetail is headed up by sales director Chris Jardine, who works alongside brother-in-law Russell Ingham on very project.

After a lengthy consultation with Chris, the couple commissioned Dovetail to oversee the layout and design of the extended cottages and once the building, plumbing, glazing and electric work was completed, the fun began with the couple choosing what style of cabinetry would be installed, the flooring, lighting and various appliances.

In the kitchen all the cabinets were made by Dovetail and painted in Little Greene’s Slaked Lime, a pure and neutral white made with a combination of minerals to give a warm and soft appearance. Slaked Lime pairs beautifully with Little Greene’s James Blue, which features on the island unit within the kitchen.

The couple selected Bianco Romano white granite for the work surfaces – a practical and inspired choice, while a Lacanche range cooker features as a dramatic focal point. Other appliances include a top-of-the-range Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer and Perrin & Rowe taps.

Softly-shaded limestone flooring complements the colours of the cabinets and runs throughout the kitchen, in to a snug and playroom and through a connecting glass link into a boot-room and utility.

With three young children this area of the house is ultimately practical with lots of storage for shoes and coats in the boot-room and in the utility, there is a traditional large Belfast sink and laundry stack. While this is the service area of the house, where day to day chores take centre stage, there is no compromise on style. Like the kitchen, all the cabinets in the boot-room and utility are of a classic design, made and installed by Dovetail in perfectly matched colours, continuing the luxurious feel of this lovely rural home.

Upstairs the country elegance continues in the en-suite and dressing room which serve the master bedroom. These spaces work perfectly – the dressing room has individually-designed storage, while in the en-suite, there is a large walk-in shower with bespoke glass screen, a cast iron roll top bath and storage cabinetry, making the room a bright and spacious area during daylight hours while in the evening, it becomes a relaxing, wind-down space before bedtime.

This family property amply illustrates Dovetail’s ability to combine luxurious design with down-to-earth practicality. Everything has been created with purpose and as a result, the design works on every level for this busy family, who are delighted with their new home.

For the skilled team at Dovetail, they pride themselves on their ability to combine top-class functionality with pleasing, aesthetic detail that makes a house, a stylish and welcoming family home.
