All About The Fillies!

Jason Fildes sums up which fillies we should be looking out for in the coming months

It’s a wonderful time of year in the racing world with the flat season ahead of us and the new two year olds beginning to learn how to race!

We seem to have concentrated on fillies this year with the following being our babies to look out for so far:

MUSIC HISTORY
Her sire is Ardad, a champion sprinter, and trainer Ed Bethell reports her to be ‘very fast!’ He plans to give her a debut run towards the end of April but at this moment the ultimate target is the Queen Mary Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot in June. Let’s hope she’s good enough to get there.

CHEERLEADER
A lovely filly by Dandy Man, in training with Karl Burke at Spigot Lodge, Middleham. She’s probably not as forward as Music History, who is out and out speed over a minimum distance. Cheerleader may well step up to six furlongs in time but we should see her on a racecourse for the first time in April.

HELLO HOTTIE
Another filly at Ed Bethell’s, from a family Ed knows well as she is by Territories, the sire of the stable’s first Group 1 winner, Regional. He will be making his seasonal debut at York at the Dante meeting and there are exciting reports about his half-sister Hello Hottie who we own in partnership with TV commentator and pundit, Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson.

AMALFINA
Bought at Tattersalls Book 1 sale by the bloodstock team who found Korker and Harvanna for us, Amalfina is a very different type of filly to the other three. She is beautifully bred, her sire being Nathaniel and her dam is Nibbling, who herself is by Invincible Spirit. We have very high hopes for her but her pedigree suggests she will thrive over longer distances, so Karl Burke is taking his time with her and we probably won’t see her in action until later in the summer. By Galileo, Nathaniel was a brilliant winner of the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 12 furlongs and the Eclipse Stakes over 10 furlongs. We are hoping Amalfina will be even better as a three year old and beyond, like her superstar half-sister, Enable!

As well as our new fillies on the flat, we are also very excited about La Zoubida, a four year old mare who will be having a first run in a race in September. Trainer Nicky Richards, based in Greystoke, Cumbria, has given us very promising reports about her. She’ll be going novice hurdling later in the season and it will be fun to see her in a ‘bumper’ in the autumn.
