MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING
On 24th September Macmillan Cancer Support’s iconic Coffee Morning event is back, and bigger than ever, with those attending or hosting an event set to raise millions to ensure Macmillan can continue to support people living with cancer. Every event, no matter how big or small, will help – events are already being planned throughout the UK, from back gardens to businesses, there will be a coffee morning where you are! The money raised goes towards funding Macmillan – who rely almost entirely on donations – and their services across the country. This means absolutely every penny raised is cherished and appreciated and really helps provide vital support. Rob Turner, Macmillan’s Area Fundraising Manager for Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside and Isle of Man, says: “The countdown to Coffee Morning is officially on, and it’s always so fantastic to see so many people get involved as every penny makes a huge difference to those affected by cancer. Every single coffee morning hosted or attended enables Macmillan to support more and more people living with cancer and their families.”

DESIGNER STORE FUNDS MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
Cancer Assessment Rapid Early Support (CARES) is a Lancashire-based charity helping in the early detection of cancer through funding endoscopy equipment for Burnley General Hospital in order to speed up waiting times for screening. Last year CARES opened a designer charity shop in Burnley, the first of its kind in the UK. The shop opened thanks to the local business community offering their services from carpenters to alarm installers, chipping in and providing the services free of charge. The shop opened its doors selling brand new designer clothes at up to 70 per cent off the recommended retail price, with 100 per cent of all revenue going directly to the charity. From Karen Millen to Moschino, the clothes were donated free of charge from various suppliers, the main one being the Boohoo group as well other designer outlets. Now back trading after lockdown, the store has celebrity fans such as Catherine Tyldesley as well as influencers and followers on social media. So far £75,000 has been donated to CARES to purchase two endoscopy machines which are up and running detecting cancer in adults and children. The next stage is to launch the concept in the Ribble Valley and CARES is set to open a store at the Wellsprings on Pendle Hill which will become CARES’ Ribble Valley branch. Fully backed by NHS East Lancashire Healthcare Trust, CARES is now hoping to fund a robot to further assist in the fight against cancer.

ULLSWATER CHALLENGE
Open water swimmer David Holden is hoping to raise money for East Lancashire Hospice by swimming the length of Ullswater next month. The seven-mile swim is in memory of friend Ian Ward, who died of cancer last year, aged 57. David’s previous open water endeavours have included swimming Windermere a total of 10.5 miles in 2017, and Coniston, five miles, in 2016. For his latest Ullswater challenge, David is training at Stonyhurst College pool where he swims on average four miles each day – more than 200 lengths – and he also open water swims on a regular basis at Salford Quays.
