ENJOY THE LOCAL
Local farmers’ markets are back up and running and we should be supporting and enjoying them, says food expert Phil Keenan
As we hopefully approach the warmer weather of summertime, I think it’s time that we look at stepping away from the mundane cellophane-wrapped food in the supermarket aisles and get our taste buds exploring something more interesting, for a change!
Much of the mass produced food and drink we consume nowadays, I find, can often be quite homogenised and bland, but this is rarely the case when you try some of the more lovingly produced foods that our local food and drink producers have to offer – really flavoursome, locally shot game, beautiful cheeses, succulent, grass-fed meats, delicious preserves and chutneys, freshly baked breads, cakes and pies as well as some excellent street food and ethnic specialities.
Know what you eat! There’s something quite special about visiting a local food or farmers’ market where you will obviously find plenty of really tasty food on offer.
You can meet the producers, who are so passionate about what they do and more than happy to tell you how it’s been grown, reared or produced – don’t worry, they’re not half as scary as they look, honest! And you’ll often even get the opportunity to taste free samples of their delicious wares before you buy them.
We have plenty of markets to choose from, in and around the Ribble Valley, and they feature many hard working producers, who really value your custom and put lots of money back into the local economy. Put them in your diary today and visit some soon.
