First inspired by the arrival of Percy, a silver-spotted British shorthair cat in 2013, his owner Sonja Farrell began shopping for the necessary cat paraphernalia to welcome her new kitten. Finding herself disappointed by the aesthetic of what was available, Sonja founded Cheshire & Wain.
Back then leather collars with breakaway buckles for a cat’s safety didn’t exist, so that became Cheshire & Wain’s focus, designing one from scratch. Now more than 10 years later, luxury leather cat collars and art remain at the heart of Cheshire & Wain.

Cheshire & Wain’s colourful art collection pays homage to the work of eccentric British artist Louis Wain, which often depicted cats with vibrant floral backdrops. Brought to life on screen by Benedict Cumberbatch in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021), Wain captivated hearts with his widely popular anthropomorphic cats, elevating their status from occasional mousers to the pets we love today. Author HG Wells once said: “He has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves.”
There is a choice of two art prints, Cat With Her Kittens and Flower Cat, which fuse Wain’s famous wide-eyed pussycats with the themes of his lesser-known work featuring flowers and landscapes. Available in A4 and A3, the imagery is specially licensed to Cheshire & Wain, with each limited-edition print produced on museum-quality heavyweight Hahnemühle paper by a fine art printer in London.
Cheshire & Wain have also launched an exclusive collection of Louis Wain’s leather cat collars for both indoor and outdoor cats this spring. In Electric Blue, Chartreuse Green, Purrsimmon Orange or Pastel Mint, the collars are made from the finest Italian leather with a matte rubberised surface, contrasting soft suede lining for comfort with an optional bell. Handcrafted with love in England, the collars feature Cheshire & Wain’s signature breakaway safety catch and optional personalisation. They arrive beautifully presented in a special edition Louis Wain gift box. High society kitties can choose to elevate their colourful collar further with a matching or contrasting Gem Collar Charm. Set in sterling silver, gems include Aquamarine, Blood Orange, Chartreuse and Pink Sapphire.
