Injury At The Hairdressers

A trip to the hairdressers should be an enjoyable and relaxing experience. But, unfortunately sometimes an injury or damage to your hair can occur due to negligent treatment, explains Joanne Smith, personal injury solicitor at Mulderrigs, part of the Farleys Solicitors family

To be clear, a negligent hair treatment isn’t when someone has received a bad haircut or is unhappy with the result. Negligent treatment is when a customer has suffered serious hair damage or injury as a result of the misuse of chemicals, failing to test before the treatment or poor or ineffective training.

Examples of hair damage include hair breakage, bald patches, burns, scarring, allergic reactions, scalp damage and swelling, among other things.

People will usually make a claim for compensation for one of two reasons – to cover the cost of remedial treatment, since the damage was not their fault so they shouldn’t be out of pocket as a result or to ensure that the same thing doesn’t happen again to someone else.

We put a lot of trust in our hairdressers to look after a part of ourselves, our hair, which is so personal to us. When the treatment is negligent, it can have a devastating impact on a person, not only physically, but mentally too.

What should you do if you have been injured at the hairdressers?
There are several steps you should take after the accident to ensure you can make a claim for compensation. Take photographs of the damage or injury and visit a doctor where appropriate for any necessary treatment.

It is also important that you don’t have any more chemicals applied at another salon to try and repair the damage or cut out the damaged hair.

Finally, get in touch with a solicitor with experience in hair damage claims at the earliest opportunity to discuss whether you have grounds for a claim and what steps you should take next. Having a solicitor fighting your corner during the claim process can help to take away a lot of the stress involved and ensure you are getting the best settlement.
