Spring In The Garden

Spring has definitely arrived and April is the time to get out in the garden to add some colour and get everything in tip top shape. Photography: Kirsten Platt

At So Plants Country Garden Store horticulturalist Michelle Unsworth and her specialist team are all set to re-plant your hanging baskets in lovely spring colours or the colour of your choice. They also have a stunning collection of expertly pre-planted baskets and pots that will brighten up your outdoor space through the spring and summer.

Call into the nursery and pick up a Plant of the Month leaflet – April’s plant of the month is Rhododendron / Azalea – wonderful flowering shrubs that put on a colourful display from spring through to early summer.

So Plants have been operating since 2012 and Michelle and her team have been growing ever since in the large outdoor space and polytunnels, where a huge selection of perennials are home-grown and set to bloom. There is a pretty collection of pansies and violas that produce an abundance of colour at this time of year and will take you through the summer too.

New to So Plants this year is a stunning lemon-coloured lilac and if you’re a gardener who loves wisteria there is a fantastic selection that has been grown on and are full of buds, ready to bloom in abundance: “We have smaller wisteria and more established ones,” explains Michelle. “We also have standard wisteria and standard topiary that are both suitable for large pots, which make a stunning focal point in the garden.”

With a full range of alpines and shrubs, So Plants, which is based in the grounds of Little Town Dairy and Farm Shop, is gearing up for the season when all gardens become a hive of activity.

Seeds are planted while herbs and vegetables begin to get established in raised beds and cottage gardens.

With an array of pots including frost-proof terracotta, stone and glazed ceramic, new to So Plants this year is a collection of super-sized lightweight pots with in-built castors so they can be easily re-positioned anywhere on patios, decking or lawns.

Renowned for its collection of high-quality gardening equipment and gardening gifts, there are bird tables, garden benches and outdoor rocking chairs, compost that is mainly peat-free, tools and irrigation equipment.

In the pretty wooden cabins on site at So Plants, visitors will find a lovely collection of Scandi-style gifts, ornaments, candles and diffusers.

Call in to So Plants Country Garden Store soon to discover a wonderful world of plants and gifts in a lovely tranquil environment. Meet social media star Melly the resident Labrador along with Michelle and her team of plant experts, who are always happy to advise on any queries including what to plant and where.
