Very Special

The great food, atmosphere, service and beautiful outdoor space at the Black Bull all contribute to the success of the award-winning Black Bull, writes Tedd Walmsley. Photography: Kirsten Platt

It was all smiles again on my latest visit to the Black Bull Old Langho – met by a beaming Becky holding up a trophy awarded at the recent Ribble Valley business awards – they had won the Hospitality Business of the Year which is a superb accolade and testimony to their continued hard work both in the kitchen and front of house.

You can image the depth of competition in this sector in the valley, and with the bar set so high Becky has decided to give up her successful day job to concentrate on the pub and to oversee the direction and development over the coming months. She’s loved by all and is an infectious leader and I’m sure will galvanise the entire team and take the pub to even higher levels within the exalted food scene locally.

April last year saw many of you supporting the Bull by utilising the newly created outside space as lockdown rules were still driving the very limited dining options. That innovative space gives a different dimension to the Bull’s eating options and will once again come into its own on warmer days and long summer nights.

My trip coincided with more developments to the menu – and out of curiosity I thought I’d have a quick look on Trip Advisor for some recent comments and feedback.

The last six of the best posts to reaffirm my view of the pub and its food, included: ‘Amazing’,‘very special’, ‘5/5’, ‘best Sunday roast for miles’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘no Bull!’

Much has been made of the atmosphere, the surroundings and the super front of house team but let’s not forget the main reason we are all going out – great food, cooked well and in this current market, still representing good value too.

The new menu certainly has something for everyone from light salads to doorstep sandwiches and traditional pub classics. They sit alongside some fantastic specials such as market fish, served with buttery new potatoes, samphire, crayfish tail and a caper butter sauce.

This is really smart cooking. The sharing boards are becoming legendary with a choice of meat, fish and a classic ploughman’s. I love the fusion dishes too – Thai green curry is perhaps my favourite, which is fragrant and spicy and served with a sticky coconut rice. All in all there’s something for everyone.

Becky, Jamie and the entire team are committed to bringing you fabulous food in a super setting – please support them. Book a table and go and see what all the fuss is about!
