WHERE TOWN MEETS COUNTRY

AND STYLE MEETS PRACTICALITY

When it comes to all things country clothing and footwear, Ken Varey in Clitheroe is Lancashire’s must-see store, writes Catherine Mallord

Ken Varey is a name long associated with the finest clothing and footwear for lovers of all things outdoors, and over its 40 year history it has even seen royalty shop there.

With antler chandeliers and coats of arms adorning the walls, the grand country decor of the store reflects the beautiful brands it sells – you can also be assured of a warm welcome from the friendly helpful team.

Owner Kevin Horkin took over the store from Ken himself in 2000 and over the last 15 years has built upon their reputation for quality and style by staying ahead of the game with new offerings from established brands alongside countryside essentials.

The North West’s largest independent retailer of Barbour and Dubarry, the store prides itself on its unrivalled selection of classic country clothing.

Kevin said: “The Dubarry boots and Barbour jackets are two of our biggest sellers, loved for their classic cool appeal and superior quality and comfort.

“Over the last few years Barbour has become iconic again with everyone wanting their quilted jackets and cat walk trends have mirrored country favourites like boots and tweeds.

“Following the fashions, we now have a range of faux fur headbands, scarves and accessories from leading name Helen Moore.

“As well as looking great the clothing leaves you feeling great, with waterproof and breathable fabrics, we have clothing suitable for all the weather the British seasons can throw at us.”

Just some of the brands in store include Aigle, Berghaus, Le Chemeau, Jack Murphy, Jack Wolfskin, Musto and Brasher.

Entering the shop you are greeted by the spectacular displays and decor which ooze style, beautifully bright clothing from Joules and the full range of coats, shirts and accessories from Barbour as well as iconic tweeds from Schoffel.

The back room has a spectacular range of menswear alongside hats for all occasions – the essential flat cap, the Australian Barmah folding hats and Tilley duck hats.

Originally established as a gunsmith, the room at the rear of Ken Varey stays true to tradition and maintains a selection of shooting essentials as well as knives, maps, walking sticks, gadgets and accessories.

Upstairs there is a vast choice of wellies and boots, from the floral prints of Joules, adored colours from Hunter to the Gore-tex Dubarry boots, muck boots and walking boots.

One of the latest additions is the Footwear Gallery next door, which takes the style and quality of the boot room but broadens the offering with quality shoes and sandals as well.

Kevin added: “We aim to stay ahead of the game with our products and brands, the Footwear Gallery came in response to demand for practical and comfortable everyday outdoor appropriate shoes as well as the boots and wellies.

“We also now have a large selection of gifts and accessories in store, an extension to the ranges from our much loved brands – bags and luggage from Dubarry, slippers from Barbour and scarves from Joules to name a few.”

From horse riders to dog walkers, for fishing, shooting and for fans of country cool fashions, you can stay warm and dry and look fantastic whilst you’re doing it with the range from Ken Varey.

The Horkin Group also owns sister stores in the town – LADY Clitheroe ladies wear and Spex Opticians and Ken Varey is now available in Yorkshire too with a store on Skipton high street.
