48 Hours In…

They say a change is as good as a rest and a little cheeky weekend away can make all the difference, what’s more it doesn’t have to break the bank, writes

With so many more countries accessible today, it’s even easier to jump on a plane and be in a different place in less than a couple of hours. Holidays aren’t always cheap, but with a little research you can still have a great experience on a budget.

Last year I visited Copenhagen. Flights were just £55 in November and our accommodation was the Generator Hostel. Never having stayed in a hostel before I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. With rooms around £40 a night plus breakfast, the place was buzzing with people of all nationalities and it had a great atmosphere. Check out the free city walking guides, most cities will do them and it’s a chance to get behind the scenes of the main streets and find out more about the place.

Wrocław, pronounced vrots-wahf, is the largest city on the Oder River in western Poland, another destination I’ve visited which is full of history. Known for its Market Square, lined with elegant townhouses and featuring a modern fountain, this place is great value for money. Here we stayed in the five-star Radisson Blu for around £80 a night.

Food is very cheap but very good and a visit to Chocolate Paradise is a must for one of its special hot chocolates.

Porto in Portugal is a fascinating and vibrant city that is rapidly becoming one of western Europe’s most respected tourist destinations. The city boasts an extensive history, interesting tourist attractions and a buzzing nightlife.

There is a lot to see and do in Porto and the city will appeal to a wide range of different visitors. Grab a map and take yourself off on a self-guided tour. Take a trip to one of the many cellars where you can enjoy a port tasting, which start from six euros each. Alternatively spend the day on one of the beautiful beaches and soak up the wonderful coastline.

This year my choice of city break is Berlin. I’ve already started planning my trip, which includes a visit to the Brandenburg Gate, a day at Tiergarten, which is the largest park in the city, with open spaces, a lake, and even the Berlin Zoo and a guided bike tour.

So, if you’re looking for somewhere to spend 48 hours in, take a look around. You’ll be spoilt for choice.
