A First-Class Service

For Horse And Rider

With fabulous new facilities, Northcote Stud in Langho is leading the way as the North of England’s premier equestrian centre, writes Gail Bailey

Set in approximately 12 acres, Northcote Stud offers a full range of bespoke services and events under the expert guidance of new owner, Emily Whiteside. Emily and her team take care of all your equestrian requirements, specialising in a full livery service, training and competitions.

“We offer a full livery service where customers are able to just turn up and ride. The team here at Northcote Stud are highly qualified, knowledgeable, passionate and take pride in making the experience the best it can be for both the horse and rider,” explains Emily.

Stables are large, fully equipped and with the further benefit of CCTV monitoring and staff on site 24 hours, owners can relax knowing their horses are completely safe and cared for.

Since taking over Northcote Stud in June 2019, Emily has introduced an extensive range of professional new facilities bringing her wealth of experience and knowledge to the business. She’s striving to make the equestrian centre the best in the North of England. Some of the high-end new facilities include the Andrews Bowen ‘ProWax’ surfaces on all three arenas. “The ‘ProWax’ surface is suitable for all competition disciplines both indoor and outdoor. It really is an extremely durable product and ensures horses can jump safely all year round,” Emily explains.

Other first-class installations include the Monarch covered horse walker, which is invaluable, especially at this time of year: “This has been so useful in the wet winter months and is included in the full livery package we offer,” adds Emily.

There is also a treadmill, solarium and wash bays with both hot and cold running water for the horses, illustrating the care, dedication and expertise available. “We can cater for different levels of fitness and re-hab with the treadmill,” Emily adds. “It is a valuable tool to help maintain fitness levels, especially as it is possible to incline the surface making it ideal to develop cardiovascular and respiratory strength too.”

Other benefits of Northcote Stud include a full set of jumps available for use all year and new winter turn-out: “We recycled the old arena surface to make winter turn-out pens which has proved a great way to re-use the old flooring adding an extra benefit for the horses.”

Emily has 13 of her own horses, competes professionally all year and is also skilled in breeding and bringing on young horses. Riding for over 17 years and competing in Europe and Florida, Emily also holds a BA (Hons) in Equine Science and Business Management and therefore not only is she experienced, but well qualified too.

She is assisted by skilled yard manager, Danny Bone, who has a wealth of knowledge having worked previously as a senior coach, breaking horses and working in competition liveries. Other experienced team members include Jessica Wright and newly appointed Rachel Purnell, who has previously worked as head groom at the renowned Millfield Stud.

As one of the leading competition centres in the North West, Northcote regularly hosts affiliated and unaffiliated events in dressage, show jumping and arena eventing with a full schedule available on their website. A further recent development is pre-registration, enabling events to run more fluidly with riders knowing the exact time they will be competing, avoiding having to wait around for long periods.

One particular exciting upcoming event is the Young Horse Championships 27th-31st May. The events are perfect for spectators too and with trade stands available and a newly re-furbished café serving hot and cold food throughout event days, there is nothing the team at Northcote haven’t considered.

Her accomplished show jumping career and great knowledge of horses also makes Emily a talented horse-riding instructor. She has developed a keen eye for problem-solving with her own horses and is more than happy to share her vast knowledge and experience with other riders. Discounts are available for a block of show jumping lessons: “I get a lot of pleasure when I see riders I have taught coming back and competing at our events here at Northcote,” Emily says.

The warmest of welcomes is certainly awaiting everyone who visits Northcote Stud with one recent customer testimonial summing it up perfectly: “Fabulous show ground, very well run, friendly staff, great surface and lovely people!”
