A SOUTH AFRICAN TASTE SENSATION

Since opening its doors less than a year ago The Mad Hunter has quickly gained a fantastic five stars on TripAdvisor writes Olivia Beaty

Tucked away in the village of St Michaels sits The Mad Hunter offering a high standard of food and a unique dining experience. Owners Travis Hunter Dunlop and Oliver Rowlands opened the restaurant’s doors in June 2017 and have gained a whole host of both regular local guests and diners from afar.

After meeting whilst working together for the Seafood Pub company, Oliver and Travis made their innovative idea into reality. With its quirky interior, delicious food, and passionate owners these are just a few reasons for its success.

Oliver tells me: “We saw an opportunity to offer something very unique and rather niche, something no one else does.”

Chef and owner, Travis Hunter Dunlop carefully created the menu which reflects his South African roots. It offers something for everyone including meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, some with a South African twist. The Mad Hunter is proud to use locally sourced produce and ingredients including Honeywell Meats, Hills Fine Foods and Cartmel Valley Game.

“One of the most popular dishes has been the traditional South African dish, Bunny Chow,” Oliver said. This is a common street food which originated from Travis’s home town of Durban, it consists of slow cooked lamb in a spicy fragrant tomato-based curry sauce.

“Its been a huge hit, great to see people enjoying something different,” added Travis.

With both owners coming from backgrounds in the hospitality industry they have a wealth of knowledge which has led to the Mad Hunter quickly gaining five stars on TripAdvisor and the spreading of its outstanding reputation.

One of the many outstanding reviews reads: “Wow, what a feast of beautiful flavours and outstanding service. The Mad Hunter has really hit the mark.”

The restaurant regularly holds Chef’s Evenings which have been incredibly popular. This monthly event invites up to 30 guests to enjoy their taster menu of five courses with a different wine to complement each course. Booking for these is essential.

Chef, Travis explains: “The idea behind these evenings is that the customers come along and try something different and unique, it’s been amazing to see how much people enjoy these evenings and how successful they are becoming.”
