CHARITY CHALLENGE

Northcote general manager Craig Jackson and marketing director Kaye Mathew are set to trek the Himalayas in a bid to raise money for Children of the Mountain charity

Northcote’s Craig Jackson and Kaye Mathew have taken on the challenge to trek the Himalayas, volunteer at schools in Bandipur and most importantly raise enough money to build another school for the Children of the Mountain charity.

Children of the Mountain supports children in Nepal, giving them access to education and personal development. Without the charity’s help, these children would have no way of overcoming hardship and inequality.

Craig and Kaye, who will join 11 other trekkers on the adventure, became aware of the charity through Mike Smith with whom they worked last year planning a dinner at Northcote to raise funds for Children of the Mountain. It was then they volunteered to embark on the trek this October in a bid to raised £10,000 – the amount needed to build a school.

Having never done anything like this before, the Himalaya trek is definitely taking both Craig and Kaye out of their comfort zone as Kaye explains: “When I was introduced to the work Mike and John Matthews, founder of the charity, were doing I was bowled over and knew immediately I wanted to be involved more. Before I knew it, Mike had sorted our flights to Katmandu! I can’t wait now, it will be life changing I know!”

Craig adds: “It’s such an amazing opportunity to be able to help children in the hills of Nepal, these are families who have faced such dreadful times and challenges, so to be able to raise money and volunteer was an easy decision.”

Among the highlights of the 10-day trek will be the 3300 steps to Ulleri where, from the top, they will catch their first glimpse of the Annapurna South summit. They will also have the opportunity to hike to the top of Poon Hill to watch the sunrise over the Himalaya and the trekkers will also help out in the Children of the Mountain school in Bandipur, where over three days they will work on one of the volunteer projects.
