Confidence Restored

A team of specialists at Renovo Dental have restored Ursula Rosimus’ smile as well as her confidence

A first responder working in the care sector, Ursula Rosimus had always been conscious about her teeth, having had a crown fitted many years ago. Just before the pandemic in 2020, she began to develop problems around the crown, as she explains: “I had an abscess and when I consulted a dentist, I was told a front tooth would have to be removed.”

Removing the top left front tooth resulted in an unsightly gap, so Ursula was advised to have a single tooth denture fitted, which was unbearable: “It was awful, but I knew I just had to get used to it. I was very self-conscious about it but there was nothing I could do as we were in the middle of Covid.”

When Ursula eventually managed to get an appointment with an NHS dentist, they suggested a bridge be fitted, which would replace the uncomfortable denture: “I felt very rushed. I didn’t know what to do so my husband suggested I speak with Dr Usman at Renovo Dental.”

During her consultation with Dr Usman Riaz, Ursula was told that a dental bridge was not the ideal solution as it would have affected the two healthy teeth either side.

“Usman was fantastic,” recalls Ursula. “He really put me at ease. It was a big deal for me, as I was really concerned about how the issue could be resolved.”

Dr Usman, a highly experienced clinician with a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Ursula, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said there was significant bone loss at the site of the missing tooth, he said a dental implant was certainly possible.”

Working alongside Usman on Ursula’s dentistry, was highly experienced periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute.

Dr Usman explains: “Ursula was missing a tooth in the aesthetic zone. She was struggling with a loose-fitting temporary denture and it really affected her confidence. She just couldn’t smile.

“During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Ursula didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.”

The next step was a consultation with specialist periodontist Dr Khurrum, who deals with degenerative bone issues and gum profiling. He carried out the bone graft as Ursula explains: “Where the crown had been I had very little bone – I had far less than the average person.”

A bone graft helps prevent tooth loss by holding your tooth in place. It also serves as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. The technique also involves applying tissue-stimulating proteins, which are the same proteins found in developing tooth enamel, which encourage the growth of healthy bone and tissue.

“There is often a general lack of awareness of what can be done in terms of the latest techniques, treatments and technology. Too often patients are told that the treatment for gum disease and bone loss is not possible. Yes, it is more complex, impossible it is not. That depends on the skillset of the team carrying out the treatment,” explains Dr Khurrum.

“Our aim is always to get gum tissue and bone strong and health before we carry out further work. The foundations have to be strong.”

As a new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is accurate, safe and comfortable and results in faster healing.

“The whole procedure was very slick and more importantly, pain-free. Dr Khurrum kept checking that I was okay as he conducted the graft,” says Ursula, who returned to Renovo a few months later to have the implant procedure.

“The implant looks and feels like my own tooth. My top teeth now are great – it’s really boosted my confidence.

“A colleague at work complimented me on my teeth and I explained all the problems I had and told them about Renovo and the implant – she couldn’t believe it as it looked so natural!”

Her treatment at Renovo has now given Ursula the confidence to wear aligners to straighten her bottom teeth: “It’s been quite a journey but it’s all been worth it. The implant has made things so much easier.

“I am so glad I made the decision to go to Renovo Dental, I can’t fault them, they have all been brilliant. I have to say, it’s been a good investment. I like smiling now!”

Speaking about Ursula’s treatment plan, Dr Usman says: “When Ursula came to Renovo Dental it was evident that her upper left front crown had failed some time ago and the resulting extraction left her with compromised gum and bone tissue in the area. Ursula was desperate to have the missing tooth replaced.

“The end result was a bespoke metal-free porcelain tooth which perfectly matches her natural existing teeth.

“It’s often much easier to carry out restoration work on multiple teeth. Replacing a single tooth, in the smile zone, is much more of a challenge. The gum tissue and the implant restoration must be in perfect harmony with the smile.

“Now it looks and feels like a real tooth – Ursula is very sociable and it really has been a confidence booster.”
