DRAMA IN THE SKIES
WITH ARTIST BARRY HILTON
This month sees the opening of a breathtaking exhibition in Lancashire by one of the UK’s most enduringly popular landscape artists, Barry Hilton
Born in Manchester in 1941, Barry Hilton has spent a lifetime developing his style and technique of painting, capturing the intense atmosphere and drama of the skies in stunning landscape and seascape paintings.
Having moved to Cornwall in 1979, Hilton found himself amongst many of the country’s most popular artists of the day and began to envisage a life as a full time artist. This period of his career had a profound influence on his future, becoming fascinated with the skies and drawing inspiration from his contemporaries as well as iconic artists such as JWM Turner.
Over the following two decades, Hilton continued to paint whilst also pursuing a successful career in industry. In the early 1990’s however he decided to devote himself full time to painting and in the subsequent years, Hilton’s work has become widely collected throughout the UK and beyond. Collectors from as far afield as the USA, Canada and Australia now collect his work when it is available.
The last 10 years has seen a growing awareness of Hilton’s work with demand now outstripping supply creating an intense scarcity for his original paintings and the necessity for a small selection of limited edition prints to be made available to help fulfil the demand.
His celebrated landscapes express emotion and atmosphere with the use of bold blocks of colour and dramatic textural juxtapositions, while his more muted harbour scenes have an understated but no less intense impact. His smooth, finely painted skies contrast with the heavy impasto techniques of the land as it appears in his highly coloured foreground.
Still based in Lancashire, Barry Hilton will be making a personal appearance on 21st June from 7pm to 9pm at Hepplestone Fine Art in Heskin, near Chorley. The evening will be a showcase of his most recent collection of original paintings and limited edition prints and an opportunity to meet the artist to discuss and admire his work.
