How to choose aviator glasses

Robert Sands from The Spectacle Factory guides us through the different styles

There can be no doubt that the most fashionable eyewear style of the moment is the aviator. Many people wear them as sunglasses, but often struggle with choosing them as clear glasses. Here are three tips for selecting the right aviator frames for you.

1. First, get the shape right.
There are three variations. Teardrop (the classic shape, which is pointed at the bottom), square, and round. Try each of these and see which feels comfortable. Teardrop tends to stand out the most as it’s different to conventional shapes, this also makes it the hardest to wear. Rounder shapes tend to fit narrower faces and squarer aviators look good deliberately over-sized.

2. Make them unique to you.
Whether it’s simply the colour (gold or rose gold are popular right now), or the design, there are lots you can do to make your glasses reflect your personality. Personally, I really recommend a subtle lens tint, such as in the Chloé frames.

3. Be brave. This is the hard bit.
A pair of glasses is the most important part of your wardrobe, because they affect your entire appearance. But that also means it can be hard to see yourself in a new style you aren’t used to at first. Decide on a certain look before you start trying on glasses and commit to it. There isn’t anyone that can’t suit an aviator (or any other style for that matter), provided they find the right one.
