Learning Through Sport

If you’re passionate about a future in sport, the new VLUK Clitheroe Football College campus could be just the place for you

Supported by the expertise of Virtual Learning UK (VLUK), Ribble Valley youngsters now have the unique opportunity to study locally for a Level 3 BTEC in Sports Coaching and Development.

In the past students have had to commute further afield to study for the BTEC, but the newly-launched Clitheroe Football College in collaboration with VLUK, is offering the programme right on their doorstep here in the Ribble Valley.

Having established a campus at the Edisford Sports Complex in Clitheroe, students aged 16-18 with five or more GCSEs at grade 4 or above, can apply for the course, which starts in September.

With a focus on football, coaching and development, the course is a no-exam qualification and offers virtual learning, work experience, voluntary and paid coaching roles and the opportunity to train and play football on a daily basis at the state-of-the-art facilities at the Edisford campus.

Learners work alongside highly trained sporting staff, and once they gain their Level 3 they can progress on to their chosen career or to university to study courses such as Sports Science, Sports Development and Sports Psychology.

As a two-year programme, the Level 3 BTEC is also intended for those who would like to progress directly into coaching.

Launched by Ribble Valley-based Pro Sport Coaching, Clitheroe Football College has access to sporting professionals who work in the world of coaching, as Adam Lakeland of Pro Sport explains: “Clitheroe Football College and VLUK is giving youngsters the opportunity to further their interest in sport with this BTEC course. It is something we are passionate about. It’s a local course for local students and there will be ample opportunities for youngsters to gain valuable work experience in a variety of sports, with coaches who work across Lancashire.”

In a typical week the Level 3 BTEC, which is worth up to three A levels, involves a minimum of 16 hours virtual study alongside on-site practical learning at the Edisford campus that features a full size 3G pitch, grass pitches, changing facilities, gym access and an Education Suite.

Students will learn alongside a dedicated team of professional and UEFA-qualified coaches, presenting an outstanding environment in which youngsters can develop their career.

A number of upcoming Open Events are to be hosted by Clitheroe Football College at the Edisford Campus where prospective Level 3 BTEC Sport students can chat to the professionals running the course.
