Man Up…

The ManVan, funded by the Movember Foundation, will be travelling around the north of England visiting rugby league events to raise awareness of men’s health issues

The ManVan aims to encourage men to talk and take action to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. It has already made its debut at the Super League Magic Weekend in Newcastle with great success. Reaching men in these regions is vital as they have lower than average life expectancies and higher than average rates of cancer, circulatory disease and respiratory disease than the rest of the UK.

It will offer rugby fans the chance to get involved in fun, interesting activities on board, all designed to get men engaging with their health, including opportunities to get advice on actions men should take to help to detect prostate and testicular cancer, recognizing early symptoms, and an area where men can learn how to have a conversation about mental health.

Fans will also have the chance to take a selfie in the Trophy Room amongst some amazing Rugby League heritage, receive a cut or shave from a top-notch barber and try their luck at the Wheel of Fortune and Buzzwire MoGame.

The ManVan Roadshow is a collaboration between charities the Movember Foundation and Rugby League Cares, who have teamed up to convert a 38-foot road home into a travelling men’s health initiative. The roadshow will see the van visit rugby league events and clubs across the north west, north east and the Yorkshire and Humberside regions of the UK throughout May – November 2018.

“The ManVan is a great example of where we have invested money raised by our community,” says Owen Sharp, CEO of the Movember Foundation. “We are going to where men are, at rugby games across the country, to spark important health conversations and help men take action on their physical and mental health. We are delighted to be partnering with Rugby League Cares to deliver some important messages.”

Emma Goldsmith, the health projects manager for Rugby League Cares, said: “We are really excited to be involved with the ManVan and are looking forward to working with the Movember Foundation to make a positive difference to the lives of men at all levels of rugby league.”

Given that fans attending matches are approximately 80 per cent male, rugby spectators are the ideal audience.
