SLOWING DOWN THE PACE

Sarah Varley discovers how we can make the very best of our great British summer

Life can get so hectic so all the more reason to make time this summer to enjoy simple pleasures in the form of our favourite British past-times.

CAMPING
Camping is a great way to slow down the pace and really immerse yourself in the beauty of our British countryside. All the benefits of eco therapy abound as you spend more time outdoors with fresh air and walks, exploring new places. Take in the views instead of staring at screens and reconnect with family over a game of cards or frisbee, gazing at the stars or waiting for your sausages to sizzle their way to perfection – relax and enjoy, memories are made of this.

If you’re not sure if camping or caravanning is your thing, there are enough glamping options available to suit everyone. Pods, yurts, treehouses, shepherd’s huts – take advantage of a luxurious base to give the great outdoors a try and you might just be hooked.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS
Visitors come from around the world to see Britain’s historic buildings and there is something extra special about our stately homes. Bring history to life with tours of opulent interiors, stories of the families who lived there and their esteemed visitors, and picture life below stairs in the kitchens.
Take in manicured lawns and treat your senses in beautifully scented rose gardens. Find inspiration in awe-inspiring architecture and art collections. And don’t forget a visit to the tea-rooms!

PARKS & GARDENS
It is easy to forget the parks and playgrounds on our doorstep but they are always worth exploring. Head to one of the beautiful Ribble Valley villages for a change of scene while the children try out the challenges of different play equipment and you can almost always find a nice cafe or ice-cream nearby.

There is also plenty of parkland worth visiting in surrounding towns – in fact, 13 green spaces across East Lancashire have been recognised as some of the best parks and public spaces in the UK.

Check before you go to see what facilities are available, whether to take a picnic, if pets are welcome and whether it is worth taking bikes or scooters for extra fun.
