WALK THIS WAY

I’ve just received my latest exciting update from Fitbit – I’ve been awarded my Sahara badge, writes Tedd Walmsley. Photography: Kirsten Platt

Believe it or not, in the last 18 months I’ve walked more than 3000 miles! I’m now averaging more than 45 miles per week and really enjoying my new level of fitness through walking, the combination of fresh air, scenery, headspace and freedom is a fabulous mix.

As many of you will know, I’m not necessarily built for walking, carrying too much weight and being the wrong side of 55 but I’m determined to lead a far healthier lifestyle. My first steps achieving my aim was the specialist fitting of some great walking shoes at our local retailer Whalley Warm & Dry. However recently on my return from sunnier climes I’ve experienced some hip pain and the thought of any injury scares me – I’ve worked too hard to find myself unable to hit the steps target I’ve set myself for 2018.

After various discussions with friends and family I took the recommendation to book an appointment at The Foot & Insole Specialist. After explaining the symptoms I was presenting, an Advanced Podiatric Biomechanical Assessment was booked as the Standard Assessment would only take the foot and ankle into consideration. The Advanced Assessment comprises a comprehensive examination of the lower limb as a whole, its structure, alignments, strengths and weaknesses of the lower limb including the hips, knees, legs, ankles and feet. The relationships between the pelvis, hips, legs, knees and feet are then assessed for their ability to function correctly, with a view to identifying any abnormalities, imbalances or weaknesses which could be the cause of forefoot, heel, knee, hip and back pain.

The Foot & Insole Specialist Graham listened as I told him of my 18-month journey of rediscovery and how lately after 90 minutes or so of walking how I could be in some discomfort in my hip and feet. Graham is a great listener and based on his extensive knowledge and experience already had an idea on what may be causing this. An evaluation of the range-of-motion and function of the joints of my feet and ankles, identified several issues with the function of my foot. Further investigations within the Advanced Assessment found problems with my knee and hip which were all linked to the issue with the foot. Graham identified tightness in my calves, thighs and ITB area from hip to knee – I guess 20 years of rugby, five-a-side and a more lethargic period, all contributed to his findings.

In addition to pinpointing the cause of my discomfort, the detailed Advanced Podiatric Biomechanical Assessment would provide Graham with the information he needed to begin the process of hand-building my custom-made insoles, which began with a dynamic analysis of the pressure distribution of both feet as I walked over a state-of-the-art pressure plate.

Graham produced a printed personal report for me with a visual record of the outcomes, demonstrating the areas requiring the most support and pressure relief whilst walking and his holistic approach also involved treating tight muscles with myofascial release technique (foam rolling) and advice for physiotherapy.

The science and technology continued as carbon copies of both feet were taken in silicone bags and the first sign of my customised new insoles started to literally take shape in front of me.

With the bespoke insoles moulded to the exact contours of my feet, the additional support and stability is added in the workshop and my made-to-measure insoles are tailored to perfectly fit my walking shoes. The whole experience lasted no more than two hours but the knowledge and experience that Graham imparted in this time was both invaluable and educational.

So, what is my outcome from this first-rate experience? I have a complete understanding of my personal situation relating to my feet, legs and hips both today and going forwards. I’ve booked in for physio to develop better flexibility and in the immediate future, have my custom-made insoles – giving me ultimate stability and the knowledge that my feet are now in the best possible position in my shoes. My body is better aligned, and I feel able to press on and reach my goals, safe in the knowledge that I’ve done everything possible to reduce any further stress on my joints and of course be pain free.

Customers travel from across the country to experience the benefits of this five-star service. Relaxed and informal, but using the very latest in technology and science, the results are incredible. To find out more about how you too could benefit from a Biomechanical Assessment and a pair of hand-built custom made insoles, can I suggest visiting The Foot & Insole Specialist website and making an appointment. They are right here in the Ribble Valley and if you do, I’m sure like me you’ll be walking pain free for many years to come. As Hippocrates said: “Walking is the best medicine.” Here’s to my 3000 miles!
