Debbie Mc Dermott and her team at the fabulous fashion store that is Velvet, were recognised with a National Award last month when Velvet was Highly Commended at the British Independent Retailer Awards in the Business of the Year category – this accolade now makes Velvet a fully-fledged BIRA member.

“We were thrilled to be recognised by BIRA!” says Debbie, founder and owner of Velvet. “We were up against some huge multi-million pound businesses so for us, as a relatively small retailer, to be recognised is a fantastic accolade!”

Velvet is also in the running in the prestigious Draper’s Awards for the Best Womenswear Independent Retailer and also for the Best Customer Experience, which takes place in September – testament to the store’s great choice of products, brands and fantastic customer service.

The team at Velvet are passionate about what they do – customers are at the heart of this ladies’ wear boutique that has forged a reputation for its brands and its friendly, welcoming excellent service.

Velvet moved to its current premises in 2016 when owner Debbie took the opportunity to expand the thriving business.

“It has been an exciting time for us,” says Debbie, who has 30 years of retail experience. Since it launched, Velvet has evolved into one of the region’s ‘go to’ boutiques for some of the best brands in the industry. But there is so much more to Velvet than just great clothes – the boutique has brands from all over the world but it is the individual attention given to customers that makes it stand out from the crowd.

The team is proud to deliver friendly, first class customer service, ensuring each shopper leaves the boutique happy with their purchase.

Placing equal emphasis on style and substance, Debbie’s team understands and values their customers, who want outfits that are as practical as they are elegant. They are dedicated to helping customers choose what is right for them.

The international and varied collections at Velvet makes this very much a destination boutique, attracting discerning shoppers from across the region, who are keen to seek out the award-winning niche brands that are displayed over two floors.

Velvet is the biggest stockist in the north for the world-renowned Danish trouser house Robell – known for their perfect fit! If you need a pair of trousers that fit, look no further as Velvet stock virtually every line of Robell’s best-selling trousers.

Mainstream Brand of the Year Joules have long been a staple at Velvet – recognised for their quirky prints and colourful ranges, this brand is going from strength to strength.

Alongside Joules sits another fabulous award-winning and ecological organic brand, Seasalt, which draws on its Cornish heritage, and is known for its seaside prints, organic cotton and commitment to quality – something that Debbie and her team at Velvet embrace.

A huge range of choice awaits you at Velvet, from the lifestyle ranges, through to more smart casual and classic styling from German brands Barbara Lebek and Golliehaug, stylish Italian designs from Peruzzi and beautiful cruise and eveningwear from Canadian brand Frank Lyman. Bariloche will also wow you with their Spanish craftsmanship, their tweed jackets and fitted shirts

“Our collections very much appeal to all age groups,” adds Debbie. “Without our customers we would not exist, and they are always at the forefront of our mind. Product knowledge is key within our team which goes hand in hand with us being the best we can be.”

“We have a very loyal customer base who enjoy our friendly, honest, no-pressure service. We want them to tell their friends about us and return again and again – and they always do!”
