BATHROOM WALLPAPER:

DISPELLING THE MYTHS

Head of design at I Want Wallpaper Alex Whitecroft dispels some of the common myths relating to using wallpaper in bathrooms

Wallpaper can breathe new life into a bathroom with the added bonus that it’s easier to replace than more permanent wall decoration (like tiles) when it’s time for a refresh and there are some fabulous designs – from faux brick to tropical fish.

Wallpaper is also extremely practical in the bathroom – there are wallpapers specifically designed for moist conditions that can also be wiped down.

MYTH # 1 – Wallpaper won’t last in a steamy atmosphere
There is a wide selection of bathroom wallpapers designed specifically for use in damp and steamy conditions that have features such as hard-wearing vinyl finishes, wipe clean surfaces and embossed detailing. When applied correctly, modern wallpapers can stay strong for years. Or, make any wallpaper moisture resistant by applying a coat of decorator’s varnish over the top to seal it.

MYTH # 2 – Feature walls don’t work in bathrooms
Feature walls actually work really well in bathrooms and are also a really simple, time-efficient way to inject modern designs into the room. Popular looks for feature walls include industrial looking wallpapers including whitewashed wood panels and bare brick, as well as metallic finishes to complement chrome hardware. Wallpaper can also create stunning effects that just can’t be achieved with tiles or paint – check out some of the exotic murals available.

MYTH # 3 – You need tiles in a bathroom
Tiles certainly have their benefits but they are expensive and difficult to remove – being stuck with dated tiles from the 70s and 80s can be a big job to change. Our most popular bathroom wallpapers are ones that mimic tiles and they’re extremely realistic. Plus there’s no grouting required!
Mosaic, slate and marble tiles are all popular bathroom looks that can be easily created at a fraction of the cost. For a wet room look – fit tiles in key wet areas, such as the inside of the shower and around the bath and sink, with tile-effect paper elsewhere.

MYTH # 4 – Pattern will make small bathrooms feel even smaller
Pattern can actually help to create the illusion of space. Far from dominating the room, it can merge boundaries when used on as many walls as possible, even extending to the ceiling. Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to stick to small scale pattern either, murals or large-scale patterns work extremely well in bathrooms, even small ones.
