CHARITY FOCUS

Live Ribble Valley takes a look at the many and varied charity projects that are taking place in towns and villages across the region

MEMORY MATTERS
Hyndburn Dementia Action Alliance and Homewise Memory Matters Project hosted a tea dance for people suffering from dementia and other memory issues. This well attended event takes place every couple of months and allows everyone to join in an activity in a safe, dementia-friendly environment, singing and dancing to old classics. There are currently over 10,000 people diagnosed with dementia in Lancashire alone and caring for that person can be emotionally and physically demanding. Hyndburn Dementia Action Alliance is a group of organisations involved in caring and supporting those people affected by memory loss, both directly and indirectly.

SHOOTING FOR A WORLD RECORD
A group of local footballers are aiming to play the long game this summer and shoot themselves into the Guinness Book of Records. Clitheroe charity worker Rick Blackburn is assembling a team of 16 players who will attempt to stage the longest ever game of five-a-side football. The current record stands at a marathon 70 hours three minutes, but Rick aims to smash that by setting a new high of 75 hours. Most importantly, in doing so, they hope to raise over £10,000 for the Foundation for Ribble Valley Families where he works. Several local businesses have already pledged their support. The attempt will form part of Roefield Leisure’s Summer Festival of Sport – and manager David Potts will be part of the team: “We look forward to supporting Richard throughout the event and helping raise funds for the Foundation for Ribble Valley Families, a charity with whom we have worked closely with over the years.” The event kicks off at 10am on Thursday 18th July and the team plans to continue playing until 1pm on Sunday.
Anyone wishing to support the event, contact Richard on 07413 053758

RECYCLE BADGE
Cub Scouts in Lancashire are being encouraged to go eco as part of a newly revised badge to teach children the importance of getting involved in environmental conservation. The Environmental Conservation Activity badge is sponsored by The Salvation Army’s Recycle with Michael initiative – which works with children to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill and donated to charities across the UK. The badge was launched earlier this month when over 50 Cub Scouts were selected to work alongside professional artists to create a gigantic replica of the newly designed badge. Kirk Bradley, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Salvation Army Trading Company commented: “We are thrilled to now be sponsoring the Cub Scouts’ Environmental Conservation Activity badge.”

RAM’S RAMBLE
Following on from Stephen Taylor’s Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge in 2018, which raised in excess of £45,000, there is a family fun day on 22nd June to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. There will be an 8k or 20k walk/run followed by a party in a field by the Red Pump at Bashall Eaves. Including live music, a BBQ, bars, pony rides, a mini-farm, Morris dancers, face painting, a fire engine, space hopping plus lots more, it’s going to be a fabulous family day, with fabulous people for a fabulous cause.
