Local Graduate Re-Invents Herself With Degree

A promotional television campaign is aiming to recruit potential higher education students in order to improve their long-term career prospects

Local graduate Melissa McConnell plays a starring role in Blackburn College’s new Reinvent Yourself television advert, to promote the College’s University Centre.

Melissa studied BSc (Hons) Psychology at Blackburn University Centre and now works in the community in Local Government with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

She shared her positive experience and journey at Blackburn University Centre to encourage potential students to retrain at the Higher Education provider and ‘reinvent themselves’.

Melissa, 34, who started at Blackburn College with few qualifications, said: “When I decided to retrain I sat down with my Volunteers Coordinator and set out a five-year plan. At Blackburn College I did my GCSEs, Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma: Social Sciences and my Psychology degree.

“I knew how passionate the lecturers were about the applied aspect of Psychology – adapting it to the context of everyday life is what appealed the most to me. I also knew that the University Centre had small class sizes so I could get the most out of my tutors.

“I always knew I wanted to retrain to provide a better life for my children and to be a positive role model for them once they were a bit older. After completing my degree at Blackburn University Centre, I was able to gain my dream job.”

It’s not too late to apply and enrol at Blackburn College or Blackburn University Centre for September 2021
