Schools Out For Summer

The schools have broken up, the sun is shining, but what to do with the children over the holidays? We’ve put some suggestions together of places to go and things to do in the north west

Tatton Park, Cheshire, is a beautiful National Trust property set in 1000 acres of the most beautiful deer park. You can witness life in the mansion, visit the spectacular gardens, or take the kids to meet the animals at the working farm. There is a brilliant adventure playground just near the car park, which you can use just for the cost of parking. Or you can explore the gardens, which often have activities for kids.

Farmer Ted’s in Ormskirk has been expanded over the years. It is the only adventure farm in the UK to have Shaun the Sheep in permanent residence.

Meet the mini beasts, try your hand at archery or get lost in the amazing adventure maze. Whatever the weather, this is a great place to visit.

If you want a nice family walk out, then take a trip out to Rivington Pike, Chorley. There’s lots of wildlife to see and old building remains and once at the top the view is fantastic, on a clear day you can see the tip of Blackpool tower, pack a picnic lunch and you’ve cracked it.

The Bee Centre at Samlesbury Hall is free to enter and gets the kids interested in nature. Its visitor centre is full of information, displays and activities which provide a fascinating insight into these amazing and important animals and their relationship with humans. The stunning, glass observation hive enables you to watch, up close, the fascinating workings of a honeybee hive, whatever the weather or time of year.

Shores Hey Farm is a hidden delight set in acres of green space overlooking the Thursden Valley in Burnley. Although primarily the home of HAPPA (Horses and Ponies Protection Association), the site provides everything that you would expect from a first-class award-winning tourist attraction destination. Open daily from 11am – 4pm the site offers indoor and outdoor activities, fabulous food, shopping, outdoor play-area and the chance to meet some of the rescued horses and ponies who call HAPPA their home.

If you’ve a Harry Potter fan in the family, then the Wizard Academy at the East Lancashire Railway will be right up their street. Join a magical cast of wacky warlocks and witches as you work your wand waving practice. This interactive adventure will see you and family part of all the action.

Get out and about this summer.
