This month sees the opening of refurbished building The Spud Shed – home to eight independent businesses ideally located next to the Owd Barn at Bispham, writes Sarah Ulyatt. Photography: Roger Moore
Housed in a 16th Century barn, the Owd Barn at Bispham’s gift loft, tearoom and rustic farm shop is always a delight, but you’re in for even more of a treat now with the addition of The Spud Shed – so called after the old potato shed that stood there only 10 months ago!
The eight businesses now calling The Spud Shed their home all complement each other with their wellbeing focus including a beauty salon, hairdressers, Yoga studio, physiotherapist, florist, a women’s boutique, kids’ clothing shop and a graphic design creative company.
Overlooking the beautiful, tranquil setting of the West Lancashire countryside, The Spud Shed is a fantastic addition to the Owd Barn at Bispham truly making it a one-stop destination and the perfect place to spend a day relaxing, pampering, shopping and eating – and who doesn’t need a bit of relaxation and ‘me’ time at the moment.
Helen Charlesworth from Owd Barn and The Spud Shed said: “The Spud Shed has actually been in the planning for the last 10 years, so we’re really proud to open the doors and show everyone our dream!
“Given the past few months, we didn’t know if we’d be able to open this year, but the team has worked a miracle to get this ready for us. We’re so grateful and extremely excited to welcome the businesses on board.”

Owd Barn continues to offer a delicious, homely menu in the tearoom and afternoon tea is just £14 per person (bookable 48 hours in advance).
Seasonal products and local produce are available in the farm shop, ready for you to stock up your cupboards at home.
Not forgetting the home and gift lofts which are packed full of inspiration to either treat yourself, or others, and coming soon are Owd Barn’s renowned Christmas displays and decorations.
Located just 30 minutes’ drive from central Preston, The Spud Shed and Owd Barn at Bispham have so much to offer, and with lots of free parking, why not pay them a visit to see for yourself?
Sorrel and Sage Florist
Offering rustic, natural bouquets and cut flowers, mother and daughter pair, Christine and Nicole, are passionate about what they do – ordering direct from Holland’s leading wholesalers, they carefully select top-grade, long-lasting flowers and plants to ensure freshness and quality.
With 30 years’ experience and a wealth of knowledge between them, Sorrel and Sage draws its inspiration from the rural setting of The Spud Shed.
Piecing together custom-made floral tributes and arrangements, the pair provide funeral and wedding services.
Plus, their local delivery service means you can send flowers and gifts to friends and family alike.

The Den Kidswear
For cool kids’ clothing from sustainable brands, look no further than The Den. Catering for newborns up to 10-year-old boys and girls, it stocks clothing with an environmentally friendly focus featuring bright, vibrant prints and an individual style.
Stockists include outerwear specialists Muddy Puddles with garments made from plastic bottles that would otherwise have gone to landfill, Tobias and the Bear with their organic cotton romper suits, Turtledove London, who are a unisex organic brand using fabrics with Azo free dyestuffs and Toastie who create sustainable, weather-proof outerwear.

A La Mode
A La Mode is a brand-new boutique selling stylish Parisian ladies’ wear and accessories, all featuring beautiful detail and an edge of luxury, but still at affordable prices.
A La Mode is French for ‘of the fashion, of the trend’ – so that’s exactly what they aim to offer with beautiful French styles from hand-picked Parisian labels including Malissa J, 3Trois Paris, Exquiss’s Paris, Choklate and Bluoltre.
Having previously worked as a designer for several leading brands, owner Alison has a great eye for fashion and will also be joined by her daughter in this new venture.
The shop is elegantly decorated, featuring colour co-ordinated displays making it easy for you to style your look, from faux fur gillets, capes and knitwear to dresses and handbags.
Elevate Physiotherapy

The Yoga Collaboration
The Spud Shed is the perfect country setting for this brand-new boutique Yoga and Pilates studio, providing a peaceful, calm and tranquil location to escape to. Offering classes for every ability and age is a focus for owner Kim, along with a promotion of wellness and a holistic approach to Yoga and Pilates, giving an understanding of how the body and mind work together to create harmony and a sense of peace.
Classes, which will be small and social with a maximum of six, include an Introduction to Yoga, an Introduction to Pilates, Vinyasa Flow, Yoga Calm, Yin and Meditation and Dynamic Pilates. Future plans include live streaming of classes from the studio and weekend workshops and retreats.

New U Hair
New U Hair cover all aspects of hairdressing with a personal touch, and at affordable prices.
